There are many country styles, such as English Country, American Country, French Country, Swedish Country and Southwest style. Other looks can be classified as either traditional, contemporary, rustic, farmhouse or cottage. The English country style has become increasingly popular over the last few years. Here are the main elements to create an English country style bedroom.

Bedroom Furniture

An English country style bedroom emphasizes lived-in comfort and traditional style. When it comes to choosing a bed to fit this style, four-poster and canopied beds are popular, but iron and brass fit the look as well. Usually, country style furniture is made from woods including walnut, mahogany, pine and oak. Painted furnishings and wicker are also appropriate.

Depending on the size of the room, select a tall highboy and/or a broad dresser, a desk, night stands and an overstuffed or wicker easy chair. Mix and match types and styles of furniture and fabrics to give the room that older, 'lived in' feel. A small round table - covered with a floral, fabric skirt to the floor - makes a great bedside table and can hide books or magazines for night time reading.

Bedroom Flooring

Floors look more traditional when stripped bare and either stained and waxed to a high, rich polish or given a distressed, whitewashed look. Use area rugs to add warmth, choose oriental prints.

Types of Materials

Materials are usually large scale prints, mostly floral designs. Chenille bedcovers are also a popular choice. Pastel florals usually make up the sheets and you will want plenty of throw pillows on top of the bed to add to the soft, voluptuous effect. Similarly the curtains are usually matching floral and are very full drapes. White or ivory lace netting over the windows filters the light and lends the room a subdued and calm atmosphere.

Antique linens can add the essence of country charm. Wonderful tablecloths and napkins, pillowcases, doilies and laces can often be found at flea markets and can be used in all kinds of decorative ways to add to your country theme. Walls are usually decorated with wallpaper; a small print is suitable, often with a boarder or wooden picture rail. Wood work should be painted in muted colours showing the wear of time to evoke a rustic country style.

Accessories, Photos, and Candles

Hang photographs or small paintings in groups to create multiple focal points around the room. You can also hang one large painting above the bed. Dried flower arrangements in baskets or ceramic vases are also in keeping with this style. Cover tabletops with bric-a-brac - anything from old china to framed family photos and silver candlesticks.

Light the room with traditional lamps. Place a silver tray on your dressing table, on it place an old fashioned style hair brush and mirror, or a collection of antique , glass perfume bottles. Ginger jar, lead crystal, brass and candlestick styles are good choices. Introduce some plants into your bedroom. Maidenhair fern, African Violets and Lilies are good choices for this style.
